A big hello from your Author and community leader Dickie
Three stories from across the Innovation world that caught our eye this week
Two of China’s biggest Robotics companies emerged as the biggest winners by medal count at Sunday’s conclusion of the inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, signalling the rapid advances being made by China in this nascent sector.
The games saw participants from 16 countries including the US, Germany and Japan with Robots athletes attempting to compete across a range of events including athletics, football, dance and martial arts.
It's all part of China's push to become a global leader in humanoid robotics. The government has a national plan to build a world-class humanoid industry by 2027. Watch the robots in action here
Kenya's tech industry is now attracting more money from foreign investors than any other sector, beating traditional areas like banking and manufacturing.
According to a new government survey, foreign capital inflows into the tech industry jumped to $500.9 million in 2024, accounting for more than a quarter of all FDI. This big increase in investment happened largely because the government removed an old rule that forced foreign tech companies to give up a 30% share of their business to a local partner, making it much more appealing for them to invest in the country. Founded in 2005 by Sebastian Siemiatkowski, Klarna made its name by mainstreaming its flagship BNPL product, which allows shoppers to delay or split payments.
They are now reported as having taken a warehouse facility (which is a line of credit from a bank that a lender can draw on to fund a new loan) from Santander. Klarna's facility will serve as a “key pillar” of the company’s growth strategy, CFO Niclas Neglen told Bloomberg on Thursday.
Klarna, which holds a Swedish banking licence, has been expanding its toolkit for funding consumer loans, including a platform that sells debt portfolios to global investors.

Turning the focus on you, our community!
This week we’re spotlighting our NZ Ecosystem Ambassador Pauli Sosa!
We were stoked to welcome Pauli as our very first region ambassador last week!
Tell us about the work you do in the Startup/Innovation space?
I run a weekly newsletter that connects the dots across Aotearoa’s startup and innovation scene, curating events, opportunities, funding news, and founder stories. Beyond that, I regularly sit down with early-stage founders to help them navigate challenges and connect with the right people and resources. I’m an active member of the NZ entrepreneurial ecosystem and host events that spotlight real founder stories, spark meaningful networking, and drive practical conversations about innovation. At the core, my work is about building bridges so founders and supporters can grow stronger together.
What's the most exciting thing currently happening in your local ecosystem?
Right now, I’m really excited about the momentum we’re seeing in founder-led initiatives and grassroots events. From AI summits to student-led showcases, and big milestones like Auckland Startup Week and Startup World Cup coming to NZ, there’s a sense of energy and confidence building. It feels like New Zealand is stepping onto the global stage in a more deliberate way, while still keeping that collaborative, supportive culture that makes our ecosystem unique.
What kind of support would you love from this community?
I’d love continued collaboration and sharing. If you’ve got events, stories, or opportunities, send them my way so I can get them in front of the community. The more we connect the dots, the stronger the ecosystem becomes. I’d also love to see more experienced founders and operators paying it forward, their lessons are gold for the next generation.
Where in the world would you like to connect with next?
Asia, I think there’s massive opportunity for Kiwi startups in those markets, and I’d love to deepen connections with the ecosystems, investors, and partners across the region.
